Reflection of Light

Light- Light is a form of invisible energy which produces the sensation of light.

Ray of light The path followed by light energy in a transparent medium is called the ray of that light.

Beam of Light- The group of rays emitted by the source of light.

1.1 Reflection of Light

Definetion- The process of bouncing back of the light to the same medium after striking a surface is called reflection.or in simple words we cn say that

The bouncing back of light is called reflection of light.

The surface which reflect light is called Reflector

Incident Ray- The ray which falls on reflecting surface or reflectoris called incident ray.

Reflected Ray- The ray which is reflected from the reflecting surface is called reflected ray.

Normal- The ray perpendicular to point of incidence is called as normal.

Incident angle- The angle between incident i and normal n is called as incident angle. It is denoted by angle(i)

Reflected angle- The angle between reflected ray r and normal n is called as reflected angle. It is denoted by angle(r)

1.1.1 Laws of Reflection

First law of reflection states that angle(i) = angle(r), i.e incident angle = reflected angle.

Second law of reflection states that incident ray, reflected ray and normal which is perpendicular to point of incidence, all lies on the same plane.

1.1.2 Types of Images

There are two types of images real images and virtual images.

Real Image- Real are the images which are formed when reflected rays actually meets i.e when two incident ray falls on plane and get reflected then these reflected rays meet and At that real image of that object is formed.These images can also be obtained on screen.

The real image of an object always lies infront of the mirror.

Real images are always inverted.

Virtual image- virtual images are the images which are not formed by actuall meeting of reflected, actually here reflected rays diverges after reflection, and it looks like that reflected rays appear to meet behind the mirror and point where these reflected rays appear to meet at that point virtual image of that object is formed.These images can't be obtained on screen and virtual images always lies behind the mirror and also these imges are alwazys virtual and erect
